Access control for enterprise AI
An AI assistant connected to internal documents looks for the relevant passages and uses them to answer. If permissions apply only to the whole file, a restricted section inside a document everyone can open still reaches the assistant. SALUS checks permissions on every section, before the search.
SALUS sits between AI assistants and the sources of company documents. Every request carries the identity of the person and of the agent acting on their behalf, and SALUS decides what may be used to answer.

The trick may work: the information is already inside the assistant.

Every access decision goes into a hash-chained log: if someone alters an entry, verification catches it and shows where.
Before text reaches the language model, SALUS redacts the personal data it recognises, such as names, email addresses, phone numbers, IBANs and Italian tax codes.
It exposes an interface compatible with the OpenAI API: an assistant built on that API connects to SALUS by changing an address, without being rewritten.
SALUS is designed to work with any language model and to be installed on the company's own systems, with data staying in Europe.
One limit we state openly: SALUS decides what the assistant may read. It is not a defence against every kind of attack, for instance hostile instructions hidden in documents the person is allowed to read.
In the demo, a customer service operator asks the assistant a question. The same question goes through three setups: no protection, document-level control, and SALUS. For each one you can see which sections reach the assistant, and why.
There is no live system behind the demo: it replays real, recorded runs of the prototype. The documents are invented, but modelled on real company procedures. The demo is in Italian.
Ten sections retrieved per question; retrieval quality stays essentially unchanged (nDCG 0.848 → 0.845). Laboratory measurements on the research prototype.
SALUS is developed by CloudSalus S.r.l., a registered innovative startup based in Foggia, Italy, founded in February 2026. The project grew out of the founder's master's thesis in computer security at Universitas Mercatorum.

SALUS is at TRL 4 today: the prototype has been built and evaluated in the laboratory; validation in an operational environment has not started yet.
